Department of Dentistry
The Department of Dentistry provides comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care services for children in the community, as well as children with special health care needs.
Dental treatment is provided on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia, nitrous oxide and conscious sedation. General anesthesia is available in the operating room.
The Department of Dentistry works closely with specialty departments at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine such as Oral Surgery, Endodontics and Orthodontics to provide comprehensive dental services.
The Dental Department also works closely with other departments within the hospital to facilitate coordinated care for patients with special health care needs.
Who is eligible for treatment?
Children with extensive dental needs:
- early childhood caries (nursing bottle caries)
- rampant dental decay
- enamel hypoplasia
- amelogenesis imperfecta
- dental anomalies
Children with developmental disorders:
- autism
- ADHD
- cerebral palsy
- mental retardation
- craniofacial syndromes
Children with medical conditions:
- congenital heart disease
- malignancy
- hematologic disorders
- seizure disorders
- asthma
Children who have difficulty coping with dental treatment.
Children with acute infections or orofacial trauma.
Insurance Issues
We accept Mass Health as well as many other private dental insurances. Please call our office for more information.
Obtaining an appointment
New patients can call directly for an appointment. A referral letter from your Dentist addressed to the Department of Dentistry detailing the patient's medical and dental history as well as a current problem list is most helpful.
